Nesting boxes are designed for specific birds. Use of boxes by those birds is determined by entrance hole diameter and box dimensions. The most successful boxes are constructed of cedar, have good drainage and ventilation, provide access for clean out, are left natural, free of paint and never have a perch. Mount the box 5 - 10 feed above ground, near or on trees, with the entrance hole facing away from the wind. Nesting materials of cotton, fur, feathers, twigs, pine needles, hay and leaves can be offered in a hanging net bag. Nesting boxes also provide protection from the weather, so leave the boxes up all year.
